Literally meaning “applique”, the Tifaifai is part of the Polynesian family life.
Defined as patchwork bed covers or quilts made out of a sheet of fabric on which have been sown one or several patchworks, or assembled several pieces of fabrics, the Tifaifai is truly precious in Polynesia.
They are invaluable gifts from grandmothers or great-grandmothers.
Symbols of affection and love, respect and consideration, they are given to a wedding, as a good-bye gift, etc.
A traditional know-how
Quite expensive, you may find them at the Market of Papeete, or during craft fares such as the Tifaifai exposition.
This event takes place every year during spring. It has a precise theme and brings together around twenty Mamas who display the products of their passion and share their know-how.
A reward goes to those who have highlighted the theme in the best way through their dexterity and creativity.
The patchwork patterns are as numerous as the Tifaifai craftwomen are. The patterns may be kept sometimes by just one person, and are jealously preserved.
